DY Library Winter Family Newsletter 2019-2020
DY Library Media Center
December 3-9 is Computer Science Education Week and the library is collaborating with the technology department to participate in the Hour of Code. This global event first began as a computer coding challenge in order to give students an engaging way to introduce computer science using a computer gaming design. DY will participate with students around the world to complete at least one hour of computer coding. We are also looking forward to introducing our new Merge Cubes to engage students in augmented reality and active learning. Our students will learn how to be creative, how to problem solve and how computer science is changing every industry on the planet. To learn more about the Hour of Code please visit The Hour of Code.
New databases and interactive eBooks are now available in the Library Media Center! In addition to the statewide databases DY students have access to Gale Cengage Opposing Viewpoints in Context. The online resource covers today's hottest social issues. The information supports science, social studies, current events, and language arts classes. The collection includes current information in a variety of formats including peer reviewed journal articles, podcasts and videos. The database presents information about specific topics to inform differing views and help to develop critical-thinking skills in order for students to draw their own conclusions. To access the school databases please click on the “Library Databases” under Quick Links on the high school website..
A new Briks illuminated table is in the library media center. This is a great addition to the Lego table we set up in September. LEGO exposes students to basic science and engineering concepts. These activities help students to develop the critical thinking skills needed to excel in STEAM disciplines (it’s also just loads of fun)!
The students on the library committee have been busy planning a movie and popcorn night to celebrate together before the winter school vacation week. The event is planned for December 19th 3:00PM-5:00PM and admission is free for all students who would like to attend.
